Summary  Information

Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (“Ericsson”) was a multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company headquartered in Sweden. Ericsson’s common shares were registered with the SEC and traded on the NASDAQ. Ericsson operated through a variety of subsidiaries including Ericsson Egypt Ltd.

Carlo Alloni initially served as the President of the Customer Unit in Northeast Africa for Ericsson Egypt and then later as Head of Operations for Ericsson’s business in the Middle East and Africa.

According to the documents in this case, between May 2010 and August 2013, Alloni helped coordinate the payment of approximately $2.1 million in bribes to top Djibouti officials. Ericsson paid the bribes through a consulting company, and the bribes enabled Ericsson to win business with that was valued at approximately €20.3 million and that resulted in profits to Ericsson ofapproximately $7 million.

On May 17, 2018, the DOJ filed a single count information in the Southern District of New York against Alloni alleging a conspiracy to violate the antibribery provisions of the FCPA. It appears that Alloni entered into a plea agreement on the same date, but the plea agreement is not available in the docket. On June 28, 2023, the court sentenced Alloni to time served in prison and ordered him to pay a mandatory assessment of $100. According to the DOJ's sentencing memorandum, Alloni provided exceptional cooperation in the prosecutions against Ericsson as well as Afework Bereket, another employee of Ericsson Egypt.
