Summary  Information

Sargeant Marine Inc. was a large asphalt company incorporated and based in Boca Raton, Florida.

Jorge Luz, a Brazilian citizen, was a business consultant from Rio de Janeiro who was hired to act as an agent on behalf of Sargeant Marine and its related companies in order to secure business with Brazil's state-owned oil company, Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras. He worked with his son, Bruno Luz.

According to the documents in this case, between 2010 and February 2015, Bruno Luz conspired with others to pay bribes to Brazilian officials on behalf of Sargeant Marine. The bribe payments totaled more than $5 million and were made through shell companies in the Marshall Islands to executives at Petrobras as well as two Brazilian politicians. As a result of the bribes, Sargeant Marine obtained numerous contracts with Petrobras that netted more than $26 million in profits.

On December 9, 2020, the DOJ filed a single count Information in the Eastern District of New York against Bruno Luz alleging conspiracy to violate the anti-bribery provisions of the FCPA. According to the docket, Bruno pled guilty pursuant to a plea agreement on December 10, 2020. The plea agreement was not publicly available at the time of entry into the database, so its precise details are unknown. Bruno is scheduled to be sentenced on November 15, 2024.

This case is ongoing.
